Books for field hockey coaches, umpires, and parents...
Hockey is a glorious sport. It has the potential to be many things, a form of entertainment and a method of exercise for many people. It can also be a method of education and rehabilitation. It has the potential to improve not only the outlook, but also the lives of the people involved. In this book we will explore a variety of different aspects of the sport of hockey, including its history and evolution, the inclusion of its participants, as well as some suggestions for its development. It is a mix of some of my previously written online blog posts, that have been compiled with some newly written articles. In general it is a celebration of a sport that I just find fun. I hope that you find the book enjoyable.

A common, and oddly accepted, lament heard at field hockey games goes something like this, "I've been watching field hockey for 10 years and I still don't understand what's going on." Field hockey just isn't THAT complicated and, short of playing for 20 years, this book will help you better understand the game whether you're a player, coach, fan, reporter, or umpire. Though not a rule book, Field Hockey: Understanding the Game is updated each summer as rule changes made by the FIH, NCAA, and NFHS require.
Through the narrative of the book, one finds field dimensions and playing time. There is a chapter dedicated to the playing rules. There are important details on, for example, how to pick a stick, player safety equipment, and goalkeeping equipment. There are chapters dedicated to playing rules and penalty plays. Through twenty pages and dozens of photographs, you'll see umpiring signals and a description of when the signals are used. A checklist allows coaches to assess players on more than 50 individual skills.
This FREE book was written by Cris Maloney for USA Field Hockey and used as part of USA Field Hockey's new umpire training programs. She’s the girl next door with a killer secret!
Alexandra “Alex” Davis is everything a college freshman should be: Top of her class. Star of the field hockey and lacrosse team. Smiles that melt professors and win over parents. She volunteers on Sundays, babysits on Fridays, and never, ever, misses family dinner.
But when she catches her boyfriend cheating, one moonlit push off a lakeside cliff turns Alex from sweetheart to something sharper.
Perfect for fans of Killing Eve, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, and every pretty lie that ends in blood.
With a title like Forgive The Ref, you might think this forthcoming book is about helping sports officials – referees, umpires, and judges. If you did, you would be wrong. This book is about helping coaches, fans, players, and parents.
For a coach, Forgive The Ref will help you help yourself to be a better coach – better for your teams and players, better for your ability to help your teams win games. What coach wouldn't want to eliminate bench penalties and suspensions, improve their career prospect, and enhance their physical and mental health. For moms, dads, and other spectators, the information here will help you to have a more positive experience watching your children compete, eliminate the possibility of you being banned from their games, and improve your health. Much of the same can be said for how this book can help the competitors.
Thanks to research from Yale University, we finally understand how to calm the brain after a 'bad call' goes against us and reset our competitive focus.
